Rejoice in the Good Surrounding Us!

Last month, I mentioned receiving a welcome reaffirmation that there are many good people out there (including you!), all over the U.S. and around the world. So, while we can't bury our heads in the sand or in ideological clouds, we also can't let the constant barrage of instantly available bad news discourage us from recognizing the massive amount of good that surrounds us.

 

That advice is aimed squarely at ... me. I don't consider myself to be a "doom scroller," because I try to look for the positive as well as the negative, but I consume a lot of news from various sources. It's critical that I maintain awareness that:

 

  1. At least half of what I see is at least partially incorrect (and includes lies)

  2. Monetary incentives are a prime driver of behavior (the love of money is the root of all evil, as the Apostle Paul taught us in 1 Timothy 6:10)

  3. Maintaining a calm demeanor is essential to receiving heavenly guidance on what is worthwhile and what is not (and I know that guidance is REAL)

  4.  No matter what happens, we always have help

 

That last point reminds me of a scene from Harry Potter where Harry is explaining to the fellow students he might start training to defend themselves against the dark arts that he's only still alive because he always had help. J.K. Rowling, who early in life nearly gave up, clearly understands this reality.

 

So, keep your head on a swivel for evil, but find the good. :)

AI Hot Plate

I learned about an amazing new project some really smart people (who also seem to have a conscience) are working on using AI. They're building a complete virtual human cell, which is unbelievably complex. And they're not just creating the architecture, but the FUNCTION.

 

A quick query of Grok tells me that at any moment, thousands of distinct processes run in parallel in a human cell (protein synthesis on millions of ribosomes, ATP production in mitochondria, cytoskeletal dynamics, membrane transport, signaling cascades, DNA repair, quality control, etc.).

 

Some estimates put the figure for eukaryotic (including human) cells at roughly 1 billion biochemical reactions per second.

 

Wow. And now we're teaching an AI model how to fluently speak the language of RNA that controls all of it.

The first part of the description for the YouTube video says: Silvana Konermann and the team at Arc Institute are trying to crack one of science's most difficult problems: why complex diseases like Alzheimer's and cancer remain so stubbornly unsolvable, even as research advances. Her solution is a universal “virtual cell” — an AI model trained on a billion biological experiments that can read the language of human cells, predict what's going wrong and reveal how to fix it.

 

Fascinating. Enjoy!

 

Progress Updates

Whispers of Divine Reckoning Draft 1 saw very good progress, going from 25K words to 66K words. We're adding a new creature to the mix, but I'll hold off on revealing what it is. My hope is to finish the first draft sometime in September, at which point I'll turn my attention to the editing of Polycarp, with the aim of publishing that before the end of the year.

 

Then, next year I aim to publish Whispers of Divine Reckoning and Cardinal Star (the 4th and final installment of the Patriot Star series; I can't wait to say I have a completed sci-fi series!).
